2016-17 Message from Principal McReynolds

“Excellence in Education” is the foundation of Los Altos High School and reflected in our annual School Accountability Report Card. We are a comprehensive high school with over 2000 students in four grade levels. We are located twenty-two miles east of Los Angeles in the suburb of Hacienda Heights. We are in our fifth year of block scheduling with In-School Support Intervention built into each class period. Our graduates are attending Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Princeton and Harvey Mudd along with hundreds of other prestigious institutions.

At Los Altos High School our motto is “Conquerors Today, Leaders Tomorrow”. Our goal is for all students to have a rigorous, well-rounded education that affords them the choice to continue their education beyond high school. We have a long tradition of excellence and our students push the standards higher each year; we expect all students to contribute to this legacy of success through their academics, activities, and community participation. We are committed to producing students that meet rigorous California State Content Standards and fulfill our Student Learning Objectives. We want our students to be participating Citizens, Communicators, Managers and Thinkers in a global world based upon Communication, Creativity, Collaboration and Critical Thinking.

We are a California Distinguished School, 6 Year WASC accredited school and earned Silver Medal recognition for being a top high school in the nation.   We have over eighteen Advanced Placement courses and over twelve honors programs to prepare students for university and multiple students being recognized as National Merit Scholars. We are extremely proud of our AVID program that supports our students and parents in creating a College Going Culture with 100% of our first graduating AVID class being accepted to and attending a 4 year university. Our Academic Decathlon, Science Olympiad, and Economics Olympiad teams continue to rank as top competitors each year and we have added competitive Future Business Leaders of America student team.

LAHS offers a range of services for Special Education and At-Risk students including Intervention built within the school day. Our students consistently perform at high levels—all of our athletic programs have a 3.0 GPA average.

The Class of 2016 was awarded millions of dollars in academic and athletic scholarships with over 90% of our students attending post-secondary education or serving in the military including enrollment at West Point. Our stake in education is higher than ever before; we must prepare our student to compete in a global economy. We encourage students to get involved in Conqueror Life. We are committed to teaching these principles in a safe, orderly and positive learning environment so that all student thrive. At LAHS there is something for everyone. We have three excellent Academies: Performing Arts, LA Tech (Engineering and Computer Tech), and Medical. Both the PAA and Engineering Academies have been recognized by the State Department of Education for excellence in practices while the Medical Academy has been awarded a grant for over the last four years to support their growing program. We have a broad spectrum of clubs, organizations, academic teams, and twenty-three interscholastic sports. Our Girls Athletic Program was ranked in the top ten of CIF-So California programs; Girls Water Polo Team was the CIF Champions and our 2010-11 Girls Volleyball Team were CIF Champions. There are over 25 student focused clubs and organizations on campus including Kiwins, Key Club, Cosmo Club, and California Scholarship Foundation (CSF). Journalism and Yearbook capture our students' daily lives; Journalism launched in 2010 an online weekly website that documents Conqueror Life and the Yearbook was chosen as one of the top 10 Design books for the second year in a row.

The success of LAHS students is well documented. Every other year our Performing Arts Academy puts on a $30,000 dollar musical production; the 2015-16 musical was "Little Shop of Horrors". Our Entertainment Unit, 150+ strong, has performed all over the world, marched at the Tournament of Roses Parade, and continues to win awards of excellence. Technology on campus keeps pace with global need with Aeries Parent Portals, Interactive Devices, SMART boards, and pod-casting.

Our success is a by-product of hard work, pride, dedication and strong relationships between the staff, students, parents and community. The support we receive from all stakeholders is crucial to our continued success. Our sense of community extends beyond our attendance boundaries and creates a diverse school community bringing many talents to our student body.
